Lean Six Sigma Problem Solving

Course Aim
This two day hands-on workshop aims to teach participants on how to define a problem appropriately then using the optimum tools get to the root cause of the problem and then finally implementing the solution & sustaining the gains.

  • Explain the DMAIC methodology
  • Key quality tools used within each phase of the DMAIC methodology
  • Hands-on practical exercises on how to work through the tools & their application to a specific problem.

Programme Outline
Day One

  • Introductions & Objectives of session
  • Team Dynamics – How to work as a team
  • Managing Change
  • Introduction to DMAIC Methodology
  • Outline key quality tools for each phase of DMAIC

Day Two

  • Outline key quality tools for each phase of DMAIC
  • Simulate the application of Quality Tools through DMAIC Methodology (Simulation Exercise scenario can be agreed in advance either applying to a work related area or a service/ manufacturing related scenario.)
  • Report out on Simulation Exercise
  • Discuss lessons learnt
  • Next Steps


Key Quality Tools proposed to be used within each of the DMAIC Phases (These tools can be altered by the client if required.)

  • Define: Creation of Project Charts using Problem Definition, Project Scoping, Project Charter, Process Map
  • Measure: Graphical representation to support problem statement (i.e. Pareto, Control Charts)
  • Analyse: Root Cause Analysis tools (i.e. Process Mapping Analysis, Cause & Effect, 5 Whys, Creative Thinking techniques)
  • Improve: Proposing & evaluating possible solution and implementation plans (i.e. Criteria evaluation matrix. Force Field Analysis)
  • Control: Control tools (i.e. Control Charts, SPC Charts, 5S, Visual Management)
